The Trinity: An Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Trinity
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (May, 1900)
Authors: Stephen T. Davis, Daniel Kendall, and Gerald O'Collins
Average review score:

an excellent volume on the Trinity
where to begin? this volume is absolutely packed full of excellent essays on the Trinity. divided into different sections (the Biblical witness; the Patristic witness; Systematic issues; Preaching the Trinity), this volume covers more ground than any other edition that i have come across, and combined with the absolutely stellar level of scholarship from all disciplines, the reader is in for a certain treat.
i have a few minor complaints, though. first, that there is no analysis of the FILIOQUE, and connected with this, that there is (as far as i could tell) no real voice for the Eastern Orthodox approach. finally, it seems as though modern defenses of the social model of the Trinity aren't given anything like a fair hearing.
but there is so much that is good in this book! the analysis of augustine's Trinitarian theology is (thank God) a breath of fresh air, and the same can be said for the analysis given here of the Cappadocian formulation. the high point of the book, for me, was van beeck's 'Trinitarian Theology as Participation', which gave a view of all existence and the universe in its totality as saturated in the Trinity.
an excellent book, i highly recommend it.

Using Foucault's Methods

Foucault's Methods Revealed
Using Foucault's Methods is an excellent introduction to what is an extensive and complex methodology. Recent times has seen an explosion of work relating to Foucault and this book seeks to expose the foundations of what may be termed a Foucaultian methodology. Though Foucault rarely wrote about his methods in any detail this book has succeeded in introducing the many aspects of his thought in a concise, authoritative and easily understandable manner. I would recommend this work to anyone approaching the work of Foucault for the first time as it illuminates much of those aspects of Foucault's scholarship that people may find difficult. The book is formed by a great style of writing that encourages the reader to pause and absorb the details on a regular basis. The concluding pages of the book include a very useful further reading list, categorised by subject area. An excellent introduction to Foucaultian scholarship, best utilised in conjunction with Foucault's original works.

The War Between the United States and Mexico, Illustrated
Published in Hardcover by Texas State Historical Assn (October, 1994)
Authors: Geo. Wilkins Kendall, George Wilkins Kendall, Carl Nebel, and Ron Tyler
Average review score:

One of the Most Important events in American History
--The War Between the United States and Mexico-- is a work by George Willkins Kendall and has been beautifully illustrated by Carl Nebel. The work in question, is a testimony to American expansionism, and narrates in detail each battle fought in Mexican soil.

Carl Nebel dedicated several years to illustrate the events of the Mexican American War and followed the traveling footsteps of Alexander Von Humboldt in Mexico. Nebel provides a magnificent illustration of one of the most important and hardbreaking moment of Mexican History: September 14, 1847 - the ocupation of The Zocalo.

A very important historical work that helps to understand with great detail and from a different perspective an all important moment in American History. An event that certainly changed the U.S. not only by adding vast new territories (California, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming), but also by taking the first steps on becoming a superpower.

Eating the Elephant
This book has become a permanent fixture at the breakfast spot on my kitchen table. It could easily be titled "How to Eat an Elephant." Every few days, I open to a different page and find out how to make my life sane. The author has done a great job of helping me approach very difficult household tasks and become good at them. This is after all another skill those of us who are not obsessively compulsive need to learn in order to survive life on the edge! So far her ideas have gone down better and have saved me real time and real money by not having to re-buy what I know I have already bought but can't couldn't find if you had a gun to my head! Her writing style is crisp and light and she approaches the negative emotion of why these tasks are so distasteful. As you read you feel she is right there at your kitchen table to help you through the tough spots. Enjoy!

White Teacher in a Black School
Published in Paperback by Devin-Adair Pub (August, 1980)
Author: Robert Kendall
Average review score:

A Precedent Setter
This is the daring book by former teacher Robert Kendall that blew the lid off an indifferent establishment within the Los Angeles City Schools system and resulted in legislation enacting standards for high school graduation.

"White Teacher in a Black School" surged to international bestseller status following the outbreak of the Watts Riots, which Kendall's riveting book seemingly predicted as African American community leaders joined Kendall and other concerned educators in urging a reformed educational system imposing standards for passage from grade to grade and ultimately high school graduation.

"White Teacher" is written in the manner of a fast-paced novel with an agenda which surpasses in sociological sweep the popular film to which some people compare it, "Blackboard Jungle" starring Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier. The events depicted in "White Teacher" were drawn from fact, encompassing two years Kendall spent in Los Angeles area minority schools. Kendall's rapid-paced first person narrative has him telling the story as "Mr. Brent," an idealistic young teacher posted to a trouble-ridden South Los Angeles school where "weapons check" is the first order of business when students arrive. When Brent seeks to immediately impose a solid curriculum to challenge students he is confronted by the school's principal, Mr. Towers, who explains that "as long as it looks as if the student is trying, then that student should be passed to the next grade." The class consists of one retarded youngster, Captain Smith, who crawls on his hands and knees, sits at one point on Brent's desk and blows on his hair, and finishes the year by proudly showing his teacher his achievement, an illegible attempt to copy the Yellow Pages of the Los Angeles Telephone Directory. One student, George Washington, is a class leader who helps Brent overcome adversity by unruly students. The chief class disrupter is Billy Parish, who at one point pulls a knife on his teacher.

"White Teacher in a Black School" was a book ahead of its time, one which helped lead the fight toward the adoption of standard testing prior to obtaining high school diplomas. Not only did it sell briskly in the United States. The book was also a major success in England, France and Switzerland, where it was published by companies in those nations.

Lady in Waiting: Developing Your Love Relationships
Published in Paperback by Destiny Image Publishers (01 December, 1995)
Authors: Jackie Kendall and Debby Jones
Average review score:

a wonderful and uplifting book for the single christian lady
This book has an incredible way of making you feel good about yourself as a single lady. We don't need a man to make us complete. As christian ladies, we all have a lot of living to do (before we get married)! Mr. Right might be waiting around the corner or it could take a few years before he's found. Whatever the situation; we should all live our lives for God to the fullest of our abilities! Single women have a lot to offer the Kingdom!!! This book helped me to see that I'm important now....not when I'm married!

For everyone--teens included! :)
I found this book while exploring the Amazon for books on Christian dating. I've already read Joshua Harris' books (I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Boy Meets Girl), When God Writes Your Love Story (Eric & Leslie Ludy), I Gave Dating a Chance, Getting Ready for the Guy/Girl Thing, etc. And all of these are very good books, but most are not on "my level." The first 4 seemed to be written for those at the "marrying age", and being 16 I do not feel I am qualified to be at that stage in life. The last one (I believe) is written for the pre-teen; the girl/boy who hasn't the slightest clue how to even speak to a member of the opposite gender.

But Lady in Waiting is different. Debbie & Jackie address the female crowd of singles; those who are not in a dating relationship. Many times reading even a Christian book on dating can get you down. I used to think & pray, "I agree with everything they're saying. When's it my turn, Lord? Why am I not in a relationship with a guy now? Where is Mr. Right?" But Lady in Waiting has been teaching me about Ruth. How she used her free time as a widow for God's glory; not wallowing in her own self pity.

I have a new resolve to become the lady God wants me to be. After all, if I want God to send me a man after His own heart who loves me as I am, I need to become someone worthy of such devotion.

So, if you're sick of waiting, read Lady in Waiting.

Patience, the key to success in life.
"Lady in Waiting," a remarkable book with powerful insights will touch every woman's heart. Debby Jones and Jackie Kendall created a masterpiece that focuses on putting God first in one's life. "Lady in Waiting," designed for any age, accurately examines problems and concerns women in today's society face. Every woman rushes to get things done as quickly as possible. With "Lady in Waiting" one learns how to slow down, wait for God to answer prayers, and in return, be rewarded with a sense of pride. Patience, the most difficult quality to develop and apply in the fast-pace world of today, seems to be the primary focus of Jones and Kendall's book as well as lives. The authors reveal that when women have patience when dealing with challenges in life; they get more accomplished. It captivates women moving them to their inner cores. The strong Christian values and beliefs are evident throughout the book as the women praise and glorify God. The authors wrote "Lady in Waiting" from a second person point of view. The point of view, containing many rhetorical questions, makes women stop and realize their priorities in life. Many spiritual books have been written which also agree that patience, the key to life's happpiness, must be found in every relationship. "Lady in Waiting" stands out from other similar novels, however, due to the authors' decision to direct the book primarily to women. Although men and women are completely different in expressing emotion, every woman faces the same emotional drama in life. "Lady in Waiting" has influenced a variety of people including pastors, youth leaders, single and married women, high school and college women, and career women. The amazing impact of this magnificent book will last forever in a woman's heart. As Jones and Kendall honestly and accurately evaluate the struggles women face in the 90's; they soothe the soul with God's miraculous word. The Bible-the women's only source of data-displays biblical truths. Although the women only use one key source, the Bible, and many quote, thoughts, stories, and inserts of other women; the book helps develop the reader into an independent, secure woman of God. The authors answer all of women's typical questions and concerns about issues such as, reckless abondonment, diligence, faith, virtue, devotion, purity, security, contentment, conviction, and most importantly, patience. The authors style of simplicity and the profound literary tactic of emotionally involving the reader, are incredible. The wonderfully written passages of elegance leave no room for argument, as they accurately secure women in the awesome power of God. The authors creatively wrote the book clearly in order to influence all women. Personally, I agree with Jones and Kendall about the importance of remebering God is the only one who can give us total security. Women depend on husbands and fathers as their strong-hold in life, but the only one who is always there for us to be our true strength is God. I have strong beliefs and morals in life as I walk with God daily. The influence of the authors values persuade me to stay true to myself and not waver in my beliefs, but influence others as I have been influenced. "Lady in Waiting" is definitely the best book I have ever read. The authors' extraordinary book actually had the strength to emotionally move me and make me feel replenished after reading this delightful book. I feel I have learned more about the wonders of God and His plan for me in developing my love relationships. I highly recommend this wonderous book to all women who want to find God's perspective on life.

A Book For The Ageless
How rare indeed to find a book to be enjoyed throughout a lifetime-- and worthy for many more! I first read this book when I was 12... I am now 18, and believe me, I've read loads of fantasy, but the Gammage Cup has a sparkle and a wit to stay brilliant and fresh with each new reading, out loud or to self. I have read this book aloud about ten times, and it is fascinating to me how every person interperets something different between it's fluid pages. For me, I think that the simple fact that it covers so many facets, is the very reason it holds me so. Carol Kendall allows me to become every character in the book, to rise and fall with their life's undulations, to breath as Muggles, to walk as Gummy, to feel the steady heart of Walter the Earl. And yet, though there are steariotypes to be seen at first glance, beneath those verbal exteriors lie real people, so real that you get to know them better and better with each reading. Indeed, on the surface you will see a charming story with colorful characters, an exciting plot, bouncing rhythm. But to chip at this jewel is to uncover a deeper self, endless allusions to all facets of life, an unplumbed sea of rhythmic words. It is a book about discovering one's self and standing firm for something-- of loyalty and friendship, of various personality. From maxims to bursting verse, it speaks with the depth of a chess master-- Truly, a book for the ageless.

Long live eccentricity!
When I first read "The Gammage Cup," I fell in love with the five misfits of Slipper-On-the-Water: I knew exactly how they felt. Through elementary school and middle school, I was always the odd one out, my peculiarities carefully noted by the mainstream group and mercilessly persecuted. The message was quite clear: if you do not comform, you are not welcome. For that reason, it was with particular joy that I watched Muggles, Mingy, Gummy, Curley Green, and Walter the Earl refuse to conform to the stultifying sameness of their village, and in fact use their outsider status to save the Minnipins. Foremost in "The Gammage Cup" is the message that difference is to be valued, not squelched, and that those who dare to be individual are the true heroes; philosophy aside, "The Gammage Cup" is a wild and wonderful read, full of humor, adventure, danger, some peculiar poetry, several proverbs, and even a bit of romance. The characters, even those you can't stand, are vividly drawn; the five main characters are colorful, eccentric, and thoroughly likable. The isolated world of the Land Between the Mountains is a great place to visit time and time again--though you might not want to live there. Give it a try if you haven't yet. "Hail, hail, to our outlaws bold..."

Wow! Kendall hits a homer!
Of the many words to describe this book, Wow is definatly one of them! This book was the best book i have read in a long time, and it was required reading! The minnipins of slipper on the water are usually very mellow and follow everything that the periods, their leaders, say. They all dressed and acted the same. But when a contest to see whose town is the best comes along, people start showing indivituality. There are 5 of them, Oh Thems. Muggles Mingy Gummy Curly Green and Walter the Earl. The town outlaws them and send them up the river. While near the mountains, strange things start to happen. Creatures are going to attack Slipper on the water! Can the 5 outlaws save the town they once loved? Find out in... The Gamage Cup.
